The beautiful and tasty snapper is always a welcome catch. These fish tend to prefer colder water but this season we have been catching plenty all through summer, a good sign of healthy fish stocks.

Great weather over the weaked saw our happy customers boat load of deep sea fish including the delicious pig-fish. Sorry the picture is not the best quality but these amazing fish all start life as females only changing to males under a particular set of circumstances. They can live up to 30 years but most caught are between 5 and 15 years.

Sometimes I think we don't give as much appreciation as we should to the deep sea fishes that give their lives for our enjoyment, both catching and eating. That can’t be said for the fellow below who is really showing his affection !

We were out Sunday and the conditions weren’t ideal. It was a group of fishing club regulars and they were not to be detererred. After initially going to Manly to get out of the Southerly slop we went out wide and were rewarded with a good haul of table fish, mainly mawies and flatties.

Blessing of the Fleet

This past weekend’s weather was pretty rubbish bit it did clear up enough for the annual Blessing of the Fleet at Sydney Fish markets where all the deep sea fishing boats come up one by one to be blessed by the local Roman Catholic Bishop. This is an age old tradition that begun in the Mediterranean.

Wednesday 2nd September 2015

It was the last morning of our holiday and I wanted one last chance at something big at Juno Point. I had heard reports that the deep sea fishing charter boats were also starting to see schools of Australian Salmon. By now Olie and I were skilled at handling the anchor so I had no worries about positioning us in what must have been al least a 5 knot incoming tide. We baited up the deep sea rods with ganged hooks, squid on one rod and pilchard on the other. The tide was too strong for the lighter rods. It looked so good I knew, no I believed, we would soon be into a big mulloway or shark, but fishing is not called catching for a very good reason. We reeled in our baits with heavy hearts, the time had come to say goodbye to the beautiful Hawkesbury and the 12 special days and nights I was lucky to spend on it with my beloved son Oliver who lives way too far away in South Africa. Here's to our next adventure Ol.
This one made national television after all !
